Utah Lawmakers Advance a Bill to Raise the Legal Smoking Age

A SENATE COMMITTEE APPROVED A BILL THURSDAY, RAISING THE AGE -- WHEN UTAH'S YOUNG ADULTS CAN PURCHASE TOBACCO -- FROM 19 TO 21.

THE SENATE HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES COMMITTEE VOTED 4-1, TO APPROVE THE MEASURE.

IT NOW ADVANCES TO THE FULL SENATE.

OGDEN REPUBLICAN SENATOR STUART REID SPONSORS THE BILL AND SAYS IT COULD PREVENT YOUNG PEOPLE FROM GETTING ADDICTED TO TOBACCO.

BUT OPPONENTS SAY THE MEASURE INFRINGES ON FREEDOMS.

THE BILL WOULD MAKE UTAH THE FIRST STATE IN THE COUNTRY TO RAISE THE TOBACCO AGE TO 21.
