Smash-and-Grab Jewelry Heist on Park City's Historic Main Street

IT'S NOT OFTEN PARK CITY POLICE GET INTO A HIGH-SPEED CHASE... BUT THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED, ABOUT 4:30 TUESDAY MORNING, AFTER THEY RECEIVED A WITNESS CALL, SAYING THE BARANOF JEWELERS STORE -- ON HISTORIC MAIN STREET -- HAD JUST BEEN BURGLARIZED.

POLICE CAPTAIN RICK RYAN SAYS, AUTHORITIES INTERCEPTED THE SUSPECT VEHICLE -- REGISTERED TO A TAYLORSVILLE OWNER -- VERY QUICKLY... BUT THEN HAD TO FOLLOW FOR ABOUT 15 MILES, INTO KAMAS.

THAT'S WHERE THE SUSPECTS DROVE OVER POLICE TIRE SPIKES... CAME TO A STOP... AND FLED ON FOOT.

THEY WERE STILL ON THE RUN, EIGHT HOURS LATER.

POLICE SAY MUCH OF THE JEWELRY WAS DISCOVERED INSIDE THE CAR.

STORE OFFICIALS SAY, THE SMASH-AND-GRAB SUSPECTS DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING... BECAUSE THE MOST VALUABLE JEWELRY WAS PASSED OVER, FOR LESS EXPENSIVE ITEMS.
